Virasat Award to be presented to musician Ajoy Chakrabarthi

Mangalore: Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate Alva’s Virasat 2012, a four-day music and dance festival, at Moodbidri on January 5.

Organised by the Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri, Alva’s Virasat Award 2012 will be presented to well-known Hindustani musician Ajoy Chakrabarthi from Kolkata, chairman of the foundation M. Mohan Alva said in a press release here on Sunday.

The inaugural session will have a violin concert by Ganesh and Kumaresh of Chennai. It will be followed by Punjabi Bhangra and folk dance by Nishan E. Khalsa and artistes of Tarn Taran troupe of Punjab.

Musical evening

Artistes from Shiva fusion group, Chennai, will present a musical evening on January 6. It will feature playback singer Karthik, Rafique Khan on sitar, Ravichandra Kuloor on flute, music director Bennet on guitar, Jayachandra Rao on mrudangam, Ankush Nayak on sitar, William on keyboard, Josy on bass guitar, Arunsukumar on acoustic drums, Chandru Dorariraj on tabla, and Thanuj on percussions. This music performance will be followed by an Odissi dance by Ramlii Ibrahim and party of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Jugalbandi

On January 7, there will be a special jugalbandi concert. It will feature exponent of Mohan Veena Vishwamohan Bhatt, Praveen Godkhini on flute, Subhen Chatterjee on tabla, Sumit Ramachandran on electric guitar, and Sambit Chattarjee on Jazz drums. Later, there will be a Kathak performance by Aditi Mangaldas and party from Delhi. There will be a fusion music programme by Mahesh Vinayakram and party of Chennai on January 8. It will have Ambrose Tucker on clarinet and keys, Laiq Qureshi, N. Rajaraman on ghatam and percussion, and Parthasarathy on mrudangam. It will be followed by a music programme by Raghu Dixit and M.D. Pallavi, playback singers.

Cultural programmes on the inaugural day will begin at 7.15 p.m. and on other days at 6 p.m., according to the press release.
